Nutrition at
Early Days Nursery

At Early Days Nursery, our qualified nutritionist leads our team of cooks to provide a well balanced menu for all our children. Our new menu was created using the latest guidance from the 'Setting the Table' document.

Our Approach to Nutrition

Our Approach to Nutrition

We have developed our menus to include suggestions from children, parents, staff and chefs.

We have also taken advice from the City of Edinburgh Council and considered innovative ideas such as aiming for a variety of 30 plant-based foods per week, reducing meat and including more fish.

We strive for continuous improvement and will be reviewing these menus in terms of sustainability and in response to feedback.

As always, the children remain at the centre of everything that we do.

Staff are Trained on the Latest Guidance from 'Setting the Table'

They encourage the children to be independent and support them where necessary. Staff sit with the children at their level and discuss the importance of a balanced diet.

We Involve our Parents in our Menu Planning

We offer parents an opportunity to come in and meet our cook and sample new menu choices at our nutrition evening.

Feedback from the Care Inspectorate

“Mealtimes supported children to be independent, learning how to serve their own food and clearing away dishes. Snack times were relaxed and sociable and staff sat with children encouraging conversations and ensuring their safety.”
“The service provided a range of healthy home cooked meals throughout the day”.
“Mealtimes were safe and sociable for children as staff interacted with them whilst being vigilant to potential risks. Older children had good opportunities to self-serve their own food and pour their own drinks. This promoted their independence skills and gave them a sense of responsibility.”
